John Webb is correct in stating that it is indeed a ballad horn, however it is not as he suggests Distin's first model but rather a one-off special with its unique large (french horn size) bell. The fact that it was sold very soon (22 Feb 1872) after it was ordered from the workshop (13 Jan 1872) suggests that perhaps it was specially built for a customer rather than being an experiment of Blaikley.
