Catalogue of the Frank Tomes Collection

This catalogue describes and illustrated each instrument in the Frank Tomes Collection. The 36 instruments and 27 mouthpieces in this collection were donated to Edinburgh University Collection of Historic Musical Instruments in February 2012 by the Collector's widow, Susan Tomes. The strength of the Collection is British brass instruments from the period 1783 to 1939.

The Frank Tomes Collection is maintained by the University of Edinburgh as resource for learning and research. The purpose of this catalogue is to summarise the research resource provided by the Collection. he publication gives detailed descriptions of 1 wind instrument of regional culture; 1 clarinet; 10 bugles, serpents and ophicleides; 7 cornopeans, cornets and vocal horns; 3 saxhorns and clavicors; 1 tuba; 7 trumpets; 5 trombones; 18 small mouthpieces for brass instruments; 9 large mouthpieces for brass instruments; and 1 turkish crescent.

The text has been prepared by Heike Fricke and Arnold Myers, the latter having written the descriptions of the brass instruments. The book is lavishly illustrated by photographs taken specifically by Antonia Reeve.
